Net worth looks beyond your monthly budget. It’s calculated by taking everything you own (assets) and subtracting everything you owe (liabilities). Tracking it over time shows whether your financial decisions are moving you forward.

This is where people get confused. You can stick to a budget and still not build wealth if debt is holding you back or you’re not building assets. Your net worth grows when you pay down debt, save, and invest over time.

The truth is, you need both. Your budget controls today’s choices. Your net worth measures tomorrow’s progress. Together, they turn short-term discipline into long-term momentum.

This lesson became real for me when I started looking beyond my monthly budget and paying attention to the bigger picture.

Twenty years ago, my net worth was barely above zero. Today, it’s many times higher. It’s not because I made one brilliant financial move or discovered a secret formula. It happened because I made thousands of small, intentional decisions over time. Yes, it took time. But in those early years, I had something more valuable than money, I had time.

Now that I’m retired, I have something I didn’t have back then… more money than time. And that’s why I’m grateful I started when I did. It’s why I believe wealth is rarely built through one big decision. It’s built through the small choices we make, repeated consistently over many years.
