Why Retirees Need a Spending Plan, Not Just a Savings Plan

retirees need a spending plan imageImagine spending 30 years saving and investing for retirement. Then retirement arrives, and the question changes. How much can I actually afford to spend?

We spend a lot of time talking about building a nest egg. But retirement brings a different challenge, turning that nest egg into a life you can actually enjoy, without jeopardizing your future.

Without a spending plan, retirees can fall into two traps. Overspending and worrying about running out of money later. Or underspending, holding onto every dollar and postponing the travel, hobbies, home projects, and experiences they worked so hard to afford.

A good spending plan creates flexibility.

If Social Security, a pension, or other reliable income covers your essential expenses, your portfolio may have more room to fund the things you want to do. When markets are strong, you might spend more. When markets are down, you can scale back discretionary spending rather than selling investments at an unfortunate time.

A thoughtful retirement spending plan considers taxes, inflation, healthcare, unexpected expenses, longevity, Social Security, and investment withdrawals. But ultimately, it should answer a simple question: How can I use my money to live well today while still protecting tomorrow?

Your savings built the foundation. Your spending plan determines how you live on it.

As for me?

I have a monthly budget, money set aside for discretionary spending, and I’ve taken a couple of nice vacations this year using money I planned for them. But blowing cash just for the sake of blowing it? Nah. Not my style.

Maybe that’s the real retirement challenge. Learning that spending money intentionally isn’t the same thing as wasting it.

So, what worries you more? Running out of money, or not enjoying the money you worked so hard to save?
