Why Are You Broke?

why are you broke imageWhy are you broke? Being broke isn’t a moral failing, it’s more like getting ambushed by life while your wallet was busy looking for Wi‑Fi.

Often it starts with a mismatch. Income that doesn’t cover basic expenses, surprise bills that arrive like unwanted party guests, or debt payments that siphon away what little is left all contribute to mismatches. Lifestyle inflation, spending more as you earn more, is basically your bank account’s slow, polite robbery. Small, repeated choices add up. Daily takeout, subscriptions you forgot you had, or impulse buys that felt necessary at 2 a.m. are all things that drain your funds. Budgeting without tracking is like dieting and ignoring calories, hopeful, but wildly optimistic.

Structural factors matter too. Low wages, rising housing costs, student loans, and slim safety nets leave many households one cat away from disaster. Financial illiteracy means people don’t know the best ways to dodge interest traps or build credit; psychology helps too, stress, keeping up with perfectly-filtered neighbors, and prioritizing instant smoothie over long-term savings.

The good news is that being broke is reversible. Start by tracking every dollar (yes, even that $3 coffee that thinks it’s invisible). Build a bare‑bones budget and cut the biggest drains first, housing, transport, and that monthly subscription to a service you used once in 2019. Create a tiny emergency fund so the next surprise bill doesn’t require emotional support and a new credit card. Automate savings even if it’s $10 a week, compound interest loves consistency (and hates excuses). Increase income where possible: negotiate pay, freelance, or finally sell the 37 mugs you don’t need. Tackle high‑interest debt strategically (snowball or avalanche, pick your weapon). Set short‑term goals and celebrate small wins (pizza only sometimes, not always on credit).

Moral of the story:

Change won’t be overnight, but consistent, intentional steps make financial stability inevitable, and infinitely funnier in hindsight. Just remember, I was once Broke! Been There, Done That, NEVER Again!
