What I Do Monthly to Keep Our Retirement Finances on Track

What I do monthly to keep retirement on track imageRetirement planning isn’t something I do once a year and then forget about. Every month, I set aside some quiet time to look at our finances. It takes about an hour, but it gives me something even more valuable: peace of mind.

I start by reviewing the previous month’s spending. I compare what we actually spent with our budget, looking closely at groceries, utilities, insurance, and discretionary spending. If we overspent in one area, I make a small adjustment now rather than letting it turn into a pattern.

Next, I reconcile our checking and savings accounts against our Social Security deposits and monthly bills. I also review our credit card statements line by line. It’s a simple, reliable way to spot unexpected charges or cancel subscriptions we no longer use.

Then, I look at our savings and investment accounts. I’m not constantly buying or selling, but I review our balances and asset allocation to make sure they still fit our long-term plan and comfort level with market fluctuations. If a bigger adjustment is needed, I reach out to our financial planner.

I also look ahead to non-monthly expenses like property taxes, insurance, medical bills, travel, and home repairs. Planning for these expenses ahead of time helps us avoid relying on credit cards or taking money from investments unexpectedly.

Finally, I update our net worth and retirement progress. Tracking the big picture helps us see exactly where we stand, giving us confidence for the month ahead.

Retirement security isn’t built by checking your money once a year.

It comes from paying attention, making small adjustments, and staying consistently involved. You don’t have to be perfect with your finances. You just have to stay engaged.
