Learn to Negotiate

Learn to Negotiate

learn to negotiate imageLearn to negotiate. Your wallet will thank you, and your pest service will wonder why you suddenly sound like a tiny, polite lawyer. We subscribe to a pest-service plan and have for years. The cost has been slowly creeping up like a raccoon toward a bird feeder, and we just got a notice of a 10% increase. I can appreciate inflation is real, but this felt like the raccoon had learned to use a credit card.

I called and calmly discussed the increase. They gave me a 50% reduction of the increase. So, if the hike was $10, they only charged me $5. In plain English, I negotiated. Fancy, right? I did not don a monocle, but it was implied.

Can you always do this? Probably not. I can’t negotiate my electric bill (I tried), or the price of gasoline. But I can shop around for lower-priced services. Don’t you compare gas-price signs like it’s NASCAR? Same energy, different wallet outcome.

Steps to take when negotiating… Mention you’re considering switching to a cheaper provider. Say it like it’s a breakup. Be calm and resolute, but open to reconciliation. Listen to their pitch. Take their self-praise with a grain of salt (and maybe a pinch of parsley). Accept a reasonable counteroffer and don’t feel guilty. You’ve just saved money. That’s adulting.

Will I look for another pest company? Probably. But I have a couple months to decide, which is plenty of time to stalk reviews and compare prices like a bargain detective.

Yes, calling your cable company and threatening to quit works sometimes. It’s basically the national sport of discount hunting. Asking for a senior discount is negotiation. Bartering is negotiation. Coupons, membership rates, and off-peak pricing? Negotiation in disguise. If you don’t like the first price, counter like you’re on Shark Tank (minus the dramatic music).

Does it always work? No. Will you sometimes get a firm “no”? Absolutely. But if you don’t try, you’ll never know, and you’ll definitely never afford the bug-free tiki bar of your dreams.

Moral of the story:

Learn to negotiate. Ask for discounts. It’s your money, and a few saved dollars now mean more coffee, more pizza, or more bug spray later.
