Estate Planning

Estate planning imageEstate planning isn’t a one-time task; it’s ongoing maintenance for your financial future. A well-maintained estate plan helps ensure your assets go to the right people and that your wishes stay aligned with life changes. Regular estate plan reviews can help prevent costly mistakes and reduce stress for your family.

Start with beneficiary designations because this is one of the most commonly overlooked areas of estate planning. Many assets transfer outside a will, including life insurance policies, retirement accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs, annuities, payable-on-death (POD) accounts, transfer-on-death (TOD) accounts, and brokerage accounts with named beneficiaries. Review primary and contingent beneficiaries, verify names match legal records, and update information after major life events such as marriage, divorce, or the death of a beneficiary. If minors are involved, consider guardianship plans or trust structures.

Next, review your wills and trusts on a realistic schedule. An annual “10-minute estate planning check” can confirm that nothing major changed, while a more complete review every three to five years is a practical baseline. Also update your estate plan after major events such as moving to a new state, marriage, divorce, birth or adoption, financial changes, health developments, or updates to tax and estate laws.

Don’t overlook important roles. Review the people chosen as executor, trustee, or guardian and make sure they are still willing and able to serve. Confirm successor choices if your first selection becomes unavailable.

Finally, keep your estate planning documents secure and ensure a trusted person knows where to find them. Even a strong estate plan can fail if it’s outdated or inaccessible.

Moral of the story:

Review beneficiary designations, update wills and trusts after major life changes, and keep your estate plan current. A little maintenance today can help protect your family and financial legacy tomorrow.
