Decision Fatigue: Is Your Tired Brain Costing You Money?

decision fatigue imageEver spent 30 minutes comparing two products… then given up, ordered takeout, and added three unneeded things to your cart? That’s decision fatigue, and it can quietly drain your bank account.

Every day, you make countless decisions. What to eat. What to buy. Which bill to pay first. By evening, your mental energy runs low, and your brain chooses easy over financially smart.

That can look like:

  • Ordering takeout because deciding what to cook feels like work.
  • Adding unnecessary items to your cart because you’re too tired to think twice.
  • Keeping subscriptions because canceling them feels like another task.
  • Putting off budgeting or saving because it feels overwhelming.

The problem isn’t that you’re “bad with money.” Sometimes, you’re just making too many decisions. So how do you protect your budget?

Simplify the decisions you make repeatedly.

  • Create a short list of go-to meals.
  • Set spending limits before shopping.
  • Review your budget when you’re rested.
  • Limit yourself to a few choices.
  • Try a 24-hour waiting rule for impulse buys, a strategy I use often.

Make your money decisions before you’re tired. Decide how much you’ll spend, what you’ll save, and which expenses are coming up while your brain is still fresh. You don’t need more willpower. You may just need fewer decisions.

This isn’t just theory. I’ve experienced the benefits myself.

When I retired, I intentionally simplified my life, including the number of decisions I make every day. One result? I’ve significantly reduced my impulse spending. Less stress has made it much easier to spend intentionally.

Where is decision fatigue showing up in your spending, and what could you simplify first?
