For decades, your financial life was about saving, investing, and building a nest egg. Then retirement arrives, and you’re expected to do the opposite. Spending down money you worked hard to accumulate can feel unsettling. I know it is for me. The solution? Turn your savings into a predictable, automated retirement paycheck.

Start by calculating your income gap. Add up your essential monthly expenses. Include housing, food, healthcare, insurance, and utilities. Then subtract guaranteed income like Social Security or a pension. The difference, your “income gap,” is the amount your portfolio needs to provide, either monthly or annually.

Next, structure your portfolio into three buckets.

  • Short-Term (1–2 years): Keep immediate withdrawal needs in liquid cash, high-yield savings, or short-term CDs to cover living expenses without selling during market downturns.
  • Medium-Term (3–7 years): Hold conservative investments and bonds for stability and steady yield.
  • Long-Term (8+ years): Maintain growth-oriented equities and index funds to outpace inflation over decades.

Drawing from your accounts this way feels less like draining savings and more like receiving a regular paycheck.

Be mindful of taxes, as the sequence in which you access taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts can impact your annual tax bill and Medicare premiums. Review your plan annually to adjust for market changes and inflation. The goal is a flexible system that allows you to spend with confidence.

How I prepared for the shift…

When preparing for retirement, I ran budget spreadsheets ad nauseam. I mapped out fixed expenses, variable costs, spending money, and a buffer for inflation. I stress-tested our plan using my Social Security and hubby’s income to see if our numbers held up, giving me total peace of mind when the transition came.

What about you? What is the biggest challenge or question you face when shifting from saving money to spending it in retirement? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
