You constantly hear the term “money management”. But have you ever really thought about what that means? If not, perhaps it’s time you really think about it.
Money management is the act of creating, organizing, monitoring, and directing money to help you reach your financial goals. I’ve talked about goal setting previously, so if you haven’t set them, start here. Money management allows you to keep control of your finances, build financial security, and allows you to sleep at night. To accomplish this, there are several things you need to do.
First and foremost, you need to create a budget for allocating your income, spending, and saving. That’s your blueprint for monitoring your earnings and expenditures. Second, you need to put aside money in savings for short and long term goals. as well as emergencies. Third, you need to invest money in stocks, bonds, etc. This is how your build wealth. Fourth is debt management. You must use your credit sensibly and pay loans off in a timely manner. This includes credit cards which should be paid off each month. Fifth is controlling your spending. Remember to determine if things are wants or needs. No retail therapy or reckless spending. Lastly, you need to do some financial planning. This includes things like retirement planning, saving for major purchases, etc.
Where do you start? Know your numbers. In other words, figure out how much income you have coming in each month. Also determine your outgo for bills and discretionary spending. Use a budget to determine your spending, savings, and investment strategies. Get rid of your debt and plan for your future.
