Just Start

Today, I met with my financial planner for my annual “check up”. He goes over our investments, tells us what he thinks the stock market will do, and if we need to make any changes to our portfolio.

I was thrilled to hear that our investments were doing well and we only needed minor changes. But, it brought me back to 20 years ago when things were significantly different.

I was struggling to keep myself and my son afloat, didn’t have a home of my own, and the future looked pretty bleak. How things change when you set your mind to saving, budgeting, and turning things around. Yes, it takes time and it didn’t happen overnight. But, it can be done and I’m living proof.

I believe the word I like to use is “focus”, but “tenacity” is another good word when starting your financial journey. The bottom line is that you have to start. If you don’t, you’ll never change your situation.

The moral of this story is: JUST START! Just do something small like decide not to get expensive coffee every morning. Make it yourself and put it in a thermos. Pack a lunch instead of eating out. Go to the local library for books and videos instead of purchasing them. I’m sure you can find something that you can do to start changing your financial life. Just make the decision to start.
