IRS Scams

irs scams imageWorried about IRS scams? You should be! Every year, criminals impersonate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to steal money and sensitive personal information. While these scams surge during tax season, they operate year-round—and they’re becoming more polished, more aggressive, and more convincing.

Here’s what you must remember:
The real IRS does not demand immediate payment over the phone. They do not threaten arrest or deportation. They do not require payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Scammers do!

One of the most common tactics is the “urgent payment” call. You’re told you owe back taxes and must pay immediately or face jail. The caller may spoof the IRS phone number so it looks legitimate on your caller ID. They use intimidation and pressure to override your judgment.

Phishing emails and text messages are equally dangerous. These messages ask you to “verify” personal information or click a link to resolve an issue. The websites often look official but are designed to steal Social Security numbers, bank details, and login credentials.

Other schemes include fake refund or stimulus offers and scams targeting tax professionals with malicious attachments disguised as new client documents.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Demands for immediate payment
    • Requests for gift cards or cryptocurrency
    • Threats of arrest or deportation
    • Unsolicited emails or texts with suspicious links

The IRS typically contacts taxpayers first by mail—not phone, text, or social media. If you’re uncertain, go directly to IRS.gov or call the official number listed there. Never trust contact information provided in a suspicious message.

If targeted, don’t engage. Hang up. Delete the message. Report the scam and monitor your credit if you shared information.

Moral of the story:

IRS scams work because they exploit fear. Slow down. Verify independently. And remember, legitimate tax authorities don’t bully, they bill. And one more time for emphasis: the IRS will never call or text you out of the blue. They will always send a letter first.

Don’t respond to anything else.
