Dryer Story, The End

Well, last week, I replaced my dryer vent and thought everything would be fine.  Yes, the vent absolutely needed to be replaced regardless of the outcome as the old one was a flexible pipe and should have been a solid one.  The flexible pipe had burst due to being so clogged in a few places and lint was coming out into our crawl space.  Not a good scenario.  

But when the old dryer was plugged back in, it still refused to heat.  We went back and forth about should we repair or replace.  After all, the dryer was 16 years old and we read that most dryers last only 10 to 13 years.  We decided to call our appliance repair guy and ask his opinion.  He told us a 16 year old dryer was “just a baby”, so we decided to repair.

He came out several days later and determined there was a broken coil (don’t ask me what coil, not savvy with this kind of stuff), and he replaced it for a cost of less than $150.00 including the service call.  This was a LOT less expensive than the cost of a new one.  Again, our emergency fund paid for this unexpected repair.  Now that the dryer is back in service, we will diligently resave the approximate total cost for both repairs of $525 as soon as possible.  For us, it will be replaced in the emergency fund within a month or two as we constantly add to our savings.

You may ask yourselves how we can easily resave and the answer is simple.  We have no debt so anything that might have gone to debt repayment in the past now goes to savings, just for times like this.  This is the goal you should want to strive for.  It IS doable.
