The Real Cost of Raising Children Today

The Real Cost of Raising Children Today

The real cost of raising children today imageChildren are priceless, but raising one today certainly comes with a clear receipt.

I remember thinking it was expensive when my kids were small, and there were times when we felt overwhelmed, too. But the costs families face today can put even more pressure on a household budget.

From the moment a child comes along, there are expenses for childcare, housing, groceries, clothing, healthcare, transportation, school supplies, and activities. And they don’t stop when children get older.

The price tag of raising a child from birth through age 17 can exceed $300,000 today, not including college. When my kids were small, I remember that figure was closer to $70,000–$80,000, or about $260,000 in today’s dollars.

Childcare can take a huge bite out of a family’s income. Housing is another big expense, especially when a growing family needs more space or wants to live in a neighborhood with good schools.

And it’s not just the big expenses.

It’s the $100 for school supplies, sports fees, birthday gifts, summer camp, doctor’s bills, and the extra groceries because teenagers seem to be hungry every five minutes!

Those smaller expenses can really add up.

Then there’s a cost we don’t always talk about, a parent’s time. Cooking, driving, helping with homework, attending appointments, and simply being there take time and energy.

I’ve learned that having a plan for your money doesn’t mean you can predict every expense. It means giving yourself some room when life doesn’t go according to plan.

A realistic budget and an emergency fund can help give you breathing room. Children are precious, but raising them shouldn’t force you to choose between providing today and building financial security for tomorrow.
