Forgetting Annual Expenses: The Budget Killer Nobody Talks About
You sit down with your budget and balance every monthly expense. Rent? Covered. Groceries? Accounted for. Entertainment? Planned. You feel in control, until your phone pings. Your $240 annual car registration payment was processed.
The problem isn’t necessarily overspending. It’s forgetting expenses like car registration, insurance premiums, property taxes, annual memberships, subscriptions, vet visits, holiday gifts, and home maintenance. They aren’t true emergencies. They’re predictable expenses with irregular timing. But left unmapped, they add thousands to your yearly spending.
That’s where preplanned spending (sinking) funds come in.
Review 12 months of bank statements, add up your non-monthly costs, and divide by 12. If your non-monthly total is $2,400 a year, set aside $200 each month in a dedicated savings account or bucket. When the bill arrives, the money is already waiting.
Without a preplanned spending account, predictable expenses often lead to three bad choices… raid your emergency fund, reach for a credit card, or scramble to cut spending elsewhere. Your emergency fund should protect you from genuine crises, not bills you could have planned for.
A strong budget accounts for how life actually works. Annual expenses aren’t surprises. They’re simply expenses that show up on a different schedule. Turn them into monthly savings, and those budget-killing surprises become planned, manageable expenses.
Do we have preplanned spending funds?
Absolutely! Ours include gifts, license plates, vacations, subscriptions, property taxes, auto and homeowners insurance with a few others mixed into the pot. When the bills come in, the money is already there to pay them. And these funds are completely separate from our emergency savings.
Remember, these expenses are real. Only the timing is changed. These categories reflect real life and your budget should reflect them.
