The 50/30/20 Budget Rule: Is it Still Relevant Today?

The 50/30/20 budget rule has been around long enough to feel like classic financial advice. The concept is simple. Use 50% of after-tax income for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings or debt payoff. But with rising housing costs, inflation, and higher utility bills, does the rule still work today?

Yes, but not as a rigid formula.

The biggest strength of 50/30/20 is its simplicity. You don’t need complicated spreadsheets to understand where your money is going. If needs are consuming 65% of your income, you immediately see why saving 20% may be tough. If wants take up too much of your budget, you have a clear place to look for adjustments.

But modern life doesn’t always fit neatly into three percentages. Housing, groceries, transportation, childcare, and healthcare vary dramatically by household. Someone with significant student loan payments may consider them a necessity or prioritize them as debt payoff. And if your income changes from month to month, percentages may need to be flexible.

That’s why the real value of 50/30/20 isn’t the numbers. It’s the discipline behind them.

Think of the percentages as a starting point, not a rule you must obey. Your budget might work better at 60/25/15, or 55/30/15, or another combination entirely. Start with your essential expenses, make room for the things you enjoy, and save what you realistically can.

A budget should reflect your real life, not make you feel like you’re failing at money.

The best budget isn’t the one that looks perfect on paper. It’s the one you can actually live with and follow.

So do we use the 50/30/20 Rule?

We absolutely incorporate it as a budgeting guideline. It’s just one of the tools we use when setting up our budget. Are we right at 50/30/20? No. But we’re close. We’re averaging 58/38/4. And while you may say that our savings are low, our life situation is different since we’re retired. While we do save, it’s not the same as when we were working.
