OBBB

OBBB imagePermanent Breaks, Temporary Windows—Plan Smart with OBBB! The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB), signed into law in 2025, brings sweeping changes to the U.S. tax code, affecting households, workers, senior citizens, homeowners, and businesses. Understanding these updates is essential to plan your finances effectively and avoid surprises.

For individual filers, one of the most significant changes is a permanent higher standard deduction, which reduces taxable income each year and is indexed for inflation. Families also benefit from an expanded Child Tax Credit that grows with inflation, offering additional relief for households with children.

Workers who earn tips or overtime are eligible for partial deductions on qualifying earnings, providing relief for hourly and service employees. Senior citizens receive targeted support through a senior tax credit and an age-based deduction. The tax credit directly reduces the amount owed, while the deduction lowers taxable income—many seniors can take advantage of both.

Homeowners can continue deducting mortgage interest, and for 2025–2028, a new deduction for auto loan interest is available for vehicles purchased in 2025, offering additional relief.

Other notable provisions include the temporary SALT deduction expansion, raising the cap from $10,000 to $40,000 through 2029, with phaseouts for higher earners. Adoption tax credits have been increased and partially refundable, and employers benefit from a larger childcare tax credit. Businesses retain key advantages, including the 20% qualified business income deduction, full equipment expensing, and improved R&D treatment.

Moral of the story:

Overall, OBBB offers greater predictability and targeted relief across the board. While many provisions are permanent, some—like SALT expansion, tips and overtime deductions, and the senior credit—are temporary. Reviewing your income, deductions, and credits now, and consulting a tax professional if needed, can help you maximize these benefits for 2025 and beyond.
