why is money such a scary topic imageWhy is money such a scary topic to discuss?  After all, money is something we use and deal with all the time.  But, it’s not usually about the actual cash.  It’s more about feeling safe, feeling capable and feeling in control of your future.

Money embodies survival.  After all, it pays for your shelter, your food, your healthcare, clothing, and your stability.  If your brain determines that something is affecting your capability to meet those needs, then it’s considered a possible danger.  It’s why you might feel a tightness in your chest, racing thoughts, or the need to pass on looking at your accounts totally.

Money can also be intensely emotional.  A lot of people tie their financial condition to their sense of self-worth, competency, or accomplishment.  In our childhoods, we learn that being financially successful means we’re accountable while screwing up means we’ve failed.  That causes embarrassment, even when it’s not our fault.  After all, layoffs, medical issues, and/or inflation are things we can’t control.

Another cause of scariness is the fear of realizing that your finances aren’t all they should be.  After all, if you take a good look, what if the numbers really suck?  If you avoid looking at the numbers, it’s like an ostrich sticking its head in the sand.  Avoidance.  It never works over the long haul.

And, it’s up there with politics and religion when having conversations with others.  It’s simply not discussed.  Most families avoid talking about it openly.  Schools don’t teach home finances even though they should.  You’re expected just to “know” how to manage money efficiently.  But, how can you if you’ve never been taught correctly?

Moral of the story?

So why is money such a scary topic? Personally, I believe that anything you don’t understand can be scary.  Fear around money isn’t a sign of failure—it’s a reflection of how much it matters in our lives. When judgment is replaced with curiosity and we take small, honest steps to understand where we stand, that fear often begins to loosen its hold. Confidence doesn’t come from getting everything perfect; it grows from clarity, built one thoughtful decision and honest conversation at a time.
