Financial Literacy - Part 2

Financial literacy imageWhat exactly is financial literacy?  You hear that term talked about but do you know what it really means?

It’s simply a guide to understanding money and one of the most important skills you can have.  Unfortunately, most people never get formally educated in this area.  Yet it affects almost every decision you make, from paying bills to buying a home to planning for retirement.

Defined, financial literacy is the capability to understand and efficiently manage money.  It includes knowing how to budget, save, invest, borrow wisely, and make informed financial decisions that support your long-term goals.  In other words, it’s knowing how money works and how to make it work for you!

Having said that, you don’t need to be a financial expert.  I’m certainly not.  But it does mean that you understand the basics.  The basics include budgeting, saving for the future, understanding credit and debt, borrowing intelligently, investing for the long term, and shielding yourself monetarily. Shielding would include things like insurances, fraud alertness, and intelligent habits to guard your money.

Why does this matter?  Financial literacy is a life skill that changes your future.  It provides confidence in making financial decisions.  It puts you in charge of your money.  You gain a defense against bad deals and scams.  You’re prepared for unexpected expenses which provides peace of mind.  And, you gain freedom to go after goals such as home ownership, becoming an entrepreneur, or retiring early.  Without financial literacy, money can become stressful.  I know, I’ve been there.  And, with financial literacy, money becomes a tool.  I’m at that stage.

Moral of the story:

Financial literacy will empower you.  The knowledge and habits that you employ will turn your income into stability, security, and opportunity.  You won’t just be surviving if you understand the basics of money.  You’ll be building a life on your terms, not someone else’s.  Read my book on how I went from broke to solvent.  Refer to my post on October 6, 2025 for additional information.
