Garage Sale

This past weekend, our town sponsored a city wide garage sale.  Our next door neighbor asked if we wanted to share the sale, so we brought over a lot of “stuff” that we no longer needed or wanted.  The sale ran solely on Saturday but we decided to open up again on Sunday in hopes of selling a few more items.  I was amazed at some of the things people bought.  For example, we had a commode that was fairly new and decided to see if it would sell (I was sure it wouldn’t, of course).  Someone actually bought it for going camping and having their own toilet available.  LOL!!!

We managed to sell about $100 worth of things which made us happy as we didn’t have to drag it home and put it back in the garage.  Additionally, what made us even happier was that we reduced the amount of “clutter” that we had been storing for absolutely no reason.  Getting rid of our clutter gave us a breath of fresh air.  The fact that we actually were able to sell it was icing on the cake.

While earning $100 didn’t make a huge difference in our lifestyles, it was nice to earn that money which we could put towards something down the road.  I would think that for some of you, that $100 could pay a bill, or be put towards an emergency fund.  I was actually so pleased about the results, I want to get rid of more things perhaps in the fall when it’s cooler, or early next spring.  The only drawback to our sale was the heat which for us was in the 90’s and very humid.  I think going forward, I’ll try to avoid another sale in the heat of summer.

So, the moral of this week’s story is that you can sell your “stuff”, make a few dollars, and get rid of clutter all in one weekend.  For us, getting rid of clutter was the biggest benefit of the sale.  For you, it may be the ability to pay something down or off, or increase your emergency fund.  Give it a try.  Regardless of how much you sell and get rid of, it will make a difference in your life.
